Upsets
Serena Williams
Serena slipped early in her match against Sasnovich and immediately called a trainer. A few points later she retired from the match. Absolutely heartbreaking.
Tiafoe – Tsitsipas
Tiafoe beat Tsitsipas in an entertaining match featuring a lot of hotshots. The crowd loved was completely behind Tiafoe.
Kvitova – Stephens
I am sure everyone circled the Kvitova-Stephens match when the draw came out. Stephens played a very clean and solid match. Perhaps, the RG injury played a role for Kvitova as well.
Murray & Otte
Andy Murray was on his way to a very dominant win against NB. He was up 2 sets and 5-0 and then lost the 3rd set 7-5. We’ll use Hannah’s interpretation of this 3rd set.
Most people will remember a certain match during the Australian Open where Kim was seen cursing in the stands. She made a comeback today. We’ve missed you, Kim.
The match was interrupted after Andy lost the 3rd set, until the roof was closed. After the restart Andy started playing well again. He was returning brilliantly all match.
Murray was understandably pumped after his match. He was also very specific about what he did in the toilet (#1 as he said). He didn’t miss a chance to send a message to the haters as well: “I don’t know why people keep asking me if this is my last tournament. I’m gonna keep playing. He is Top 30 in the rankings. I’ve hardly played any matches this year and I beat him.”
Otte, Andy Murray’s 2nd round opponent, beat Rinderknech in a match that went to 12-12 in the 5th. He finished his match almost 24 hours later than Murray.
Other notable results
Djokovic – Draper
Day 1 started with a rain delay meaning we only got to see Center Court and Court 1 for the first few hours. Djokovic had a slow start losing the first set and slipping all over center court but played 3 strong sets to finish the match.
Jabeur & Venus Williams
The Birmingham champion, Ons Jabeur, started in dominant fashion and beat Peterson 6-2 6-1. She faces Venus Williams in the second round. I for one am very excited.
Venus is playing her 90th major but she didn’t want to talk about her age, so Chris Evert asked about her love life.
Another legend that we got to see today is Mama Oracene. She never fails to give us meme material.
Venus had great words to say about Jabeur.
Vekic & Pliskova
Vekic who got injured during AO is back and healthy on the court again. She beat Potapova today and set up a match against Pliskova. (We are also excited about that one)
Sabalenka
The second seed in the women’s draw had no issues at all against the always tricky Niculescu.
Swiatek – Hsieh
In another highly anticipated match, Swiatek did a good job of dealing with Hsieh. Surprisingly Swiatek was the one who came up with the hotshots in this match.
Camila Osorio-Serrano
Camila Osorio-Serrano won her first round match against Kalinskaya and played the rally of the tournament thus far.

Cami had a lot of support on this tiny court in Wimbledon.
Muguruza – Ferro
Muguruza completely dominated the match against Ferro. She even served for the double bagel.
Ahn – Watson
Another highly entertaining match that ended even later than the Murray – NB match is Watson – Ahn. Ahn pulled off a great comeback with some high quality tennis.
Carla Suarez-Navarro
Carla deserves more than the few gifs we’ll add here. She played a terrific match against Barty taking it to a 3rd set despite Barty serving for the match in the 2nd set.
It was great to see Carla’s mum there for her.
The end of the second set was Carla’s best period of the match. very high quality stuff.
Kiki Bertens
Bertens also played her last Wimbledon match today. She lost to Kostyuk.
We included some of Bertens’ quotes in Dutch press. It’s very sad.
Federer – Mannarino
Federer started well but then lost the 2nd and 3rd set.
Federer started playing better again in the 4th when Mannarino slipped and had to retire.
Other Results
Krejcikova keeps winning.
In another match that felt like it’s been going on for ages, Andujar finally won it after serving for it 3 times.
Oddest Moment of Round 1
The Monfils match was suspended due to slippery surface a few minutes before all the other courts started playing due to the lights.

Best Moments of Round 1
We also had this moment in day 1 with one fan clearly very invested in Fusocvics’ stretch routine.
A lot of matches were canceled on day 1 and some had to be suspended over night, so get ready for huge issue tomorrow. Day 2 started out better but it involved a very long rain delay.
Stat of Round 1
Let’s see if this stat holds up tomorrow when the match is concluded.
